Profile

Diabetic foot assessment, acute and chronic woundcare management

Diabetic foot assessment
The prevalence of diabetes is 8.3%, which represents 382 million people with diabetes. This
is projected to rise to 592 million by 2030 (Foundation and Federation, 2006), with some of
the increase associated with the increase in population size and some of the increase
associated with the increase in obesity.
One of the most common complications of diabetes, especially in poorly controlled diabetes,
is a loss of sensation in the skin of the feet, by nerve damage: peripheral neuropathy. It is
estimated that Ten years after the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, 20% of patients have
neuropathy; 50% of patients have neuropathy after 25 years of diabetes (Valensi 2010) and
7% of patients have neuropathy at the time of discovery of diabetes.
