Diabetic foot assessment, acute and chronic wound care management

The prevalence of diabetes is 8.3%, which represents 382 million people with diabetes. This is projected to rise to 592 million by 2030 (Foundation and Federation, 2006), with part of the increase linked to population growth and part to the rise in obesity.

One of the most common complications of diabetes, especially when it is poorly controlled, is a loss of sensation in the skin of the feet caused by nerve damage: peripheral neuropathy. It is estimated that ten years after the diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, 20% of patients have neuropathy; 50% of patients have neuropathy after 25 years of diabetes (Valensi 2010), and 7% already have neuropathy when their diabetes is discovered.
