General Paediatric Surgery
Hernias and hydroceles
Assessment and treatment planning for:
- Inguinal hernias
- Umbilical hernias
- Epigastric hernias
- Persistent or communicating hydroceles
Undescended testicles
Assessment of:
- Palpable and non-palpable undescended testicles
- Retractile testicles
- Testicular position and development
- The need for orchidopexy, where appropriate
Circumcision and penile conditions
Consultations for:
- Medical circumcision, including cases of BXO or recurrent balanitis
- Phimosis and difficulty retracting the foreskin
- Penile adhesions
- Other congenital or acquired penile conditions
Where clinically appropriate, treatment options and surgical planning will be discussed in detail.
Skin and soft-tissue lumps
Evaluation and treatment planning for:
- Dermoid cysts
- Pilomatricomas
- Lipomas
- Enlarged or problematic lymph nodes
- Vascular malformations
- Birthmarks and moles requiring assessment or removal
Paediatric Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Surgery
Reflux and feeding difficulties
Assessment of children with significant gastro-oesophageal reflux or feeding problems, including discussion of:
- Medical and surgical treatment options
- Nissen fundoplication
- Gastrostomy or PEG insertion where nutritional support is required
- Coordination with paediatric gastroenterology, dietetic and hospital teams
Chronic constipation and bowel conditions
Assessment of children with persistent or difficult-to-treat bowel symptoms, including:
- Intractable constipation
- Suspected Hirschsprung’s disease
- Rectal biopsy where clinically indicated
- Anal fissures
- Perianal fistulas
- Perianal abscesses
Abdominal pain and abdominal conditions
Consultations for acute or recurrent abdominal pain, including assessment of:
- Chronic abdominal pain
- Gallbladder disease and possible cholecystectomy
- Meckel’s diverticulum
- Other abdominal surgical conditions requiring specialist review
Paediatric Urology
Hypospadias and congenital penile conditions
Comprehensive consultation for children with hypospadias or other congenital variations in the position or appearance of the urethra.
Families will receive an explanation of the condition, possible treatment options and the timing and planning of any reconstructive surgery.
Urinary tract conditions
Assessment and treatment planning for:
- Recurrent urinary tract infections
- Hydronephrosis
- Vesicoureteric reflux (VUR)
- Pelvi-ureteric junction obstruction (PUJ obstruction)
- Other congenital or acquired urinary tract abnormalities
Scrotal and adolescent conditions
Consultations for:
- Varicoceles
- Testicular pain
- Scrotal swelling or abnormalities
- Testicular position problems
- Genital and adolescent conditions such as labial adhesions
Neonatal Surgery and Antenatal Counselling
Antenatal consultations
Expert counselling for expectant parents following the identification of a possible structural abnormality on a foetal scan, including:
- Congenital diaphragmatic hernia
- Abdominal wall defects, including gastroschisis and omphalocele
- Congenital lung lesions
- Other suspected congenital surgical conditions
The consultation is designed to help parents understand the diagnosis, possible treatment pathways, expected hospital care and the questions they may wish to discuss with their maternity and neonatal teams.
Neonatal surgical conditions
Postnatal assessment and surgical planning for conditions including:
- Intestinal atresia
- Malrotation
- Imperforate anus
- Other congenital abnormalities affecting the gastrointestinal tract
Tongue-tie and ankyloglossia
Assessment of infants with tongue-tie who are experiencing significant breastfeeding or bottle-feeding difficulties.
Where clinically indicated, minor surgical division of the tongue-tie, known as frenulotomy, may be discussed.
What to expect during the consultation
During the appointment, Mr Ahmed will:
- Take a detailed medical and surgical history
- Discuss your child’s symptoms and concerns
- Perform an appropriate clinical examination
- Review relevant scans, reports and previous investigations
- Explain the diagnosis and treatment options clearly
- Discuss whether observation, further testing, minor treatment or surgery is appropriate
- Advise whether treatment should take place at KIC or in a specialist hospital setting
- Provide a clear plan for follow-up and next steps
Parents and guardians are encouraged to bring any previous medical letters, scan reports, imaging, test results or hospital correspondence to the appointment.
