The role of a GP
Your GP is your first point of contact for non-emergency and preventive medical care during clinic hours, which vary from one clinic to another. GPs are trained in medicine and qualified to treat people for general health problems, such as illnesses or injuries that cannot be treated with over-the-counter medication. Some GPs specialise in particular areas, such as children’s health or care of older people.
Developing an ongoing relationship with one GP is often the most effective way of managing your healthcare: they get to know you over time and become familiar with your medical history. You may need to see a few GPs before you find the one you trust most and feel comfortable with.
If you are seeing several healthcare practitioners for the same or different health issues, your GP is the best person to coordinate your overall healthcare.
